Mapping a Mess of a Mind

I specifically remember a day last year when I admired students' mindmaps and thought to myself "I wish I could do something and have it turn out like that but boy am I glad I don't have to do that, I can't even draw a straight line." Well...so much for that.

After receiving our first creative project assignment, of course- a mindmap, my brain began to flood almost immediately. The thought of connecting objects and ideas that aren't usually attached in any way, shape, or form seems a bit abstract and difficult to me. The funny thing is, I couldn't stop myself from trying to do it for hours after leaving class. I sat in the cafeteria and thought, "fork-prongs-tuner-piano-keys-lock-combination," or "cereal-flakes-dandruff-blizzard-shovel." I let my eyes wander in room, trying to mindmap my way so that my laundry basket connected to my jar of candy; my ipod to my accounting textbook. Connections are all around us, waiting to be made.

I am only beginning and haven't had the "AHA" moment of what my central concept is going to be, but hopefully I can get on a roll once I do figure it out and be able to connect ideas as easily as I could during lunch. And who knows, maybe my drawings will surprise even me. But, for now, my head feels like when my closet decides (or I allow it)to throw up all over my floor; a mess.

Intro To Ideas

Well, here we are. Introduction to Creativity and we have to document our ideas. Bummer, right? No way, I think this is going to be a blast! We all have thousands of thoughts, many of which are ideas, run through our brains every day. All I have to do now is nurture some of those ideas and see where it takes me.

As you could have probably assumed from the title of my blog (and the mere fact that I go to SMU), I am an iPhone owner, user, and addict. Now that I think about it, I consider my iPhone to be one of my many creative outlets. I know I know..that sounds like a horrible excuse for being on my phone 24/7 but hear me out. I got the new iPhone, you know, the one that has the wicked awesome Application Store. It's like utopia for a creative thinker. I can customize the applications that appear on my phone. I currently have the "iDoodle" for when I get bored and am in the mood to play like I'm in kindergarten, the "iYardage" for the many rounds of golf I play, "Shazam" which is this really great application that cures all those annoying times when you hear a song and love it but have no idea what it's called, "Money" which is a link that takes me directly to my bank account, along with many other games, utilities, and shortcuts. No, I'm not an Apple rep. I just love my iPhone and I think you should too.

Anyways, I am just getting my feet wet in the world of creativity so we will see how it goes! In the meantime, I will be doodling on my iPhone.
